Syracuse, NY (January 6, 2012) – The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Anaheim Ducks have assigned defenseman
Matt Smaby to the Crunch.
Smaby, 27, played 32 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2010-11 season, going scoreless with 17 penalty minutes. The 6'6'', 227 lb, defenseman has played in 122 combined NHL games with Tampa Bay recording six points (all assists) and 106 penalty minutes. In 156 career AHL games with Springfield and Norfolk Smaby recorded 30 points (5g, 25a) and 148 penalty minutes. Originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round, 41
st overall, Smaby was acquired by the Ducks via free agency on July 14, 2011. Smaby has not appeared in a game this regular season due to a thumb injury suffered during the Ducks preseason contest against Vancouver on September 24.
The Crunch visit the Hamilton Bulldogs on January 6 for the third game of a seven game road trip. The team returns home on January 20, 2012 to host the Norfolk Admirals at the War Memorial Arena.
