Game Notes: 12/27/07 v. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
Syracuse, NY (December 27, 2007) - Alexandre Picard scored the first goal of Thursday's game for the Syracuse Crunch against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
It was the first goal Syracuse has managed to get behind the Penguins in the home-and-home series, but it wasn't enough. The Pens notched three unanswered goals and skated away with a 3-1 win at the Onondaga County War Memorial.
Picard deflected in an Aaron Rome point shot, his second goal of the year, on the power play at the 6:17 mark of the first period. The hitting was hard and heavy but while Syracuse was delivering the body checks the Penguins' Kurtis McLean banged home Chris Minard's rebound to knot the score after 20 minutes.
Syracuse consistently poured 13 shots on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie David Brown in each period but the Crunch had nothing to show for it except a gash on the bridge of Konopka's nose when he was hit with one of those 39 shots in the second period.
The Syracuse captain returned in the third but the Penguins added a couple of fluke goals. The first by Nathan Smith six minutes into the second period after Picard had taken out Connor James behind the Syracuse net. The puck squirted back out to the shortside as Smith poked it home.
Before the third period was two minutes old Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was buzzing around the Syracuse net when a errand stick came flying toward Crunch goalie Karl Goehring. The stick seemed to break Goehring's concentration for a moment, but long enough for Tim Wallace to flip home an insurance marker for the Pens.
Syracuse takes on the Manitoba Moose at home Saturday.
