Crunch Slay Monsters

Cleveland, OH (December 2, 2007) – The Syracuse Crunch defeated the Lake Erie Monsters tonight, 5-2 at the Quicken Loans Arena in front of 2,711fans.

The Crunch came out wanting to continue their trend of getting off to a fast start. They certainly did that when just 13 seconds into the game, Derek MacKenzie jammed home a rebound from a Derek Dorsett shot to put the Crunch up 1-0. Lake Erie would tie the game at the 12:32 mark when, with Brett Motherwell in the box for hooking, Johnny Boychuk stepped into a shot and drove it past Adam Munro to tie the game, 1-1. Lake Erie starter Jason Bacashihua played well stopping 12 of 13 shots in the first. The Crunch out-shot the Monsters, 13-4 in the frame

Syracuse took the lead back 6:21 into the second when Derek MacKenzie tallied his second goal of the game. MacKenzie was pulled down on a short-handed breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. He skated in and beat Bacashihua to the glove side to give the Crunch a 2-1 lead. Syracuse would extend their lead to 3-1 when, at 8:03, Phillipe Dupuis won an offensive zone face-off back to Clay Wilson who let go a bullet from the point to beat Bacashihua. Lake Erie answered back just 2:20 later when the Monsters broke in on a 3-on-2 and Eric Healey fed Cody MacLeod who got behind the defense, deked to his forehand and put the biscuit past Munro to cut the Crunch’s lead to 3-2

The Crunch would re-gain their two goal lead at 8:29 of the third when Trevor Frischmon stole the puck from a Lake Erie defenseman, moved in and sent a wrister past Bacashihua to go up 4-2. Syracuse would make it 5-2 when Jeffrey Szwez cashed in on the power-play when he deflected a MacKenzie wrist shot from the point into the back of the net at 9:49. The Crunch never looked back after that and pulled out the 5-2 victory.
