Game Notes: 11/30/07 v. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
Crunch Iced by Penguins
Syracuse, NY (November 30, 2007) –The Syracuse Crunch fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight, 4-2 at the War Memorial at Oncenter in front of 4,930 fans.
The game and the Crunch got out to a fast start when just :42 seconds in, on a 2-on-1 break that developed from a sloppy Wilkes-Barre/Scranton line change, right wing Steven Goertzen broke in down the right side and slid a wrister through the pads of Penguins starter Ty Conklin. Aaron Rome and Trevor Frischmon picked up the helpers on the goal. The lead did not last long as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton answered back just 2:55 later with the Crunch’s Aaron Rome in the box for boarding. The puck found its way onto the stick of Penguins’ center Tim Brent who deked to his backhand and slipped one by Crunch starter Adam Munro. Joakim Lindstrom's goal at 5:42 put Syracuse back in the driver's seat. Lindstrom took a pass from linemate Derek MacKenzie in the neutral zone, skated untouched into the offensive zone, sliced and diced his way through the defense and let go a perfect wrist shot from the hash marks that beat Conklin high to the glove side. Munro was sensational in the final 15 minutes of the period and stopped 16 of 17 shots in the stanza.
The first and second halves of the second period were like night and day, as the first ten minutes did not produce much action other than a Kyle Wharton tripping penalty at 5:34. At the 10:14 mark Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would tie the game 2-2 on a perfect tic-tac-toe play. Smith sent a perfect pass on to the tape of left wing Tim Wallace, who sniped a one-timer to the top corner past a helpless Munro. The pace of the game picked up and continued through the rest of the second period after the Penguins tied the game. Alexandre Picard and Joakim Lindstrom picked up roughing minors at 18:45 along with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Alex Goligoski.
The Penguins started the period on a carry-over power play but could not convert as the Crunch were strong on the penalty kill. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would take the lead 10:14 into the period when Ryan Lannon notched his second goal of the season by taking a centering feed and squeezing one through Munro. It was a tight-checking game the rest of the way as the Penguins buckled down defensively. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would put the game away when Jeffe Taffe scored his tenth of the season at 14:30. The Crunch could not mount a comeback and fell by a final of 4-2.
