Cardiac Crunch Come Back Again

Syracuse, N.Y. (May 7, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch are truly the cardiac kids. Joakim Lindstrom fired home the game-winner nearly 10 minutes into overtime to give the Crunch a 5-4 win and a three games to one lead over the Toronto Marlies in the North Division finals. Down 4-2 with eight minutes to play, it looked as if the Marlies were going to even the series at two games each, but then at the 12:18 mark Derek MacKenzie whistled a shot from the right circle that found the top corner on the short side. Suddenly the Crunch found the spark that had been missing for the last five periods and started an onslaught of Toronto goalie Scott Clemmensen. Clemmensen and the rest of the Marlies were equal to the task but Derick Brassard fired a desperation shot toward the net from a sharp angle near the goal-line while the Crunch were on a power play and what-do-you-know it the puck hit a Toronto players skate in front and popped into the net to tie the game at 4-4 with only a little over 90 seconds left in regulation. Crunch captain Zenon Konopka tied the game at one and Tom Sestito gave Syracuse a 2-1 lead after the first period. 3-Stars—No. 1, Lindstrom, No. 2, Brassard, No. 3, Jay Harrison (four assists for Toronto) They said it - “We didn’t feel very good about ourselves after the first period. We didn’t play with desperation or enough energy. We had a big talk between the first two periods. Guys like mark Rycroft and Zenon Konopka let us know that we need to play with a lot better effort. We came out with a lot more energy the second and third periods.” Joakim Lindstom’s post-game comments. “You feel that if you keep the pressure on that at any time the puck will go into the net. We’ve been stressing this whole series to just throw the puck on net. The first two goals tonight weren’t pretty at all but we got some lucky breaks. It was only a matter of time before one of those shots was going in.” Derek MacKenzie on the Crunch flurry in the game’s last eight minutes and overtime. “I thought we did a real good job of sending wave after wave at them in the overtime. I wasn’t happy with our effort early on in the game. We weren’t working hard enough. Hard work is what got us here over the last three months and we weren’t doing it. We worked hard in spurts but we’d take the last 15-seconds of a shift off, it was killing us. It was giving them great scoring chances and they capitalized on them. There was little doubt we’d come back but we needed to get more traffic in front of their goalie. He’s been playing really well but we needed to get in front of him and we did and we won.” Zenon Konopka’s post-game comments.

Crunch Comeback Falls Short in Overtime

Syracuse, N.Y. (April 19, 2008) - The run has ended, but the battle still rages. The Syracuse Crunch lost 3-2 in overtime to the Manitoba Moose, before a raucous crowd of 5,562 at the War Memorial at Oncenter. The loss evens the North Division Semifinal at 1-1 as the best-of-seven series shifts to Manitoba for games three, four and five. Mike Brown came around from the back of the net and stuffed home the game-winner at the 14:50 mark of the first overtime. Karl Goehring, in the net for Syracuse, had his pad against the post but Brown pushed the pad and the puck across the line. Nobody expected that Syracuse would ever lose another game after stringing 16 wins together. The Crunch trailed 2-0 heading into the third, but came back to tie the game. Andrei Plekhanov and Duvie Westcott both blasted home goals to force overtime. Syracuse, once again, had a hard time figuring out Manitoba goalie Cory Schneider but early in the third Schneider had to leave the game with a bad left-leg cramp he developed on a pad save of Gilbert Brule. He was replaced by Drew MacIntyre. MacIntyre had a blast by Plekhanov go off his mask, land behind him and bounce into the net at the 6:43 mark while Syracuse was on the power play. With six minutes remaining Westcott fired home the tying goal from the center blueline that glued every one of the fans to their seats to see if the Crunch could pull another win out of their magic hat. Brown’s game-winner erased that possibility but it just means that the Crunch will attempt to start another string Tuesday at the MTS Center in Winnipeg. 3-Stars—No. 1, Brown, No. 2, Westcott, No. 3, Michael Grabner (Game’s first goal).

Crunch Drop Game Four to Moose

Winnipeg, MB (April 25, 2008) – The Syracuse Crunch fell to the Manitoba Moose tonight, 5-2 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The Syracuse loss evened their best-of-seven North Division Semifinal series at two games apiece. Looking to take a three games to one lead in the series, the Crunch came out strong and controlled play from the opening face-off. They finally cashed in at the 11:26 mark when Joakim Lindstrom scored his second goal of the series. On the power play, David Cullen sent the puck to Andrei Plekhanov, who faked a slapshot and sent a perfect pass over to Lindstrom who buried the puck into an open net for a 1-0 Crunch lead. Manitoba answered on a 5-on-3 advantage with 10 seconds to go in the first frame. Danny Groulx took a one-timer from Jannik Hansen and fired the puck past Karl Goehring to tie the game at 1-1. The Moose capitalized on the momentum built in the second period as Alexandre Bolduc nabbed his first goal of the playoffs halfway through the second stanza. Off a face-off, Maxime Fortunus corralled the puck, slid in down the right side and sent a perfect feed over to Bolduc who deposited the puck into the empty net to give Manitoba a 2-1 advantage. Jason Jaffray tallied just 27 seconds later to make it 3-1. Just a minute and a half later, Michael Grabner notched his third of the playoffs when he fired a wrister past Goehring to give Manitoba a 4-1 lead. The Crunch got one back with just under three minutes left in the second when Derek MacKenzie broke in short-handed and slid one past Schneider to cut the deficit to 4-2. Syracuse could not mount a comeback in the third period and Manitoba’s Mike Brown added an empty-net goal to make it 5-2 with one minute left in regulation to seal the victory for the Moose.
