The Syracuse Crunch won their first-ever division championship on Friday night, defeating the Rochester Americans 3-1 at the BlueCross BlueShield Arena.
Second-year pro Jonathan Schill scored the game-winning goal with 9 minutes, 49 seconds remaining in the game and goaltender J.F. Labbe turned yet another spectacular performance, stopping 37 of 38 Rochester shots.
Syracuse is the first team in the AHL to clinch their division and by doing so is assured of a top three seed in the Western Conference for the Calder Cup Playoffs as well as a bye in the qualifying round.
The Crunch enters Saturday’s games in a tie with the Norfolk Admirals for the second seed, trailing Grand Rapids by one point for the Conference crown. The regular season concludes on April 7 with the Calder Cup Playoffs beginning the following week.
