Syracuse, NY (October 25, 2008) - On a night when the Syracuse Crunch honored Canastota, NY native and Boxing Hall-of-Famer Carmen Basillio, and the Crunch lent their support to the Carol M. Baldwin Research Fund with a ‘Pink Out’, the hometown team did their part by disposing of the Rochester Americans by a 6-1 count at the War Memorial at Oncenter in front of 5,863 fans. The victory extended the club’s winning streak over Rochester to 13 games dating back to last season
Just 17 seconds into the game the Crunch drew first blood when Kirill Starkov took a wrist shot from the top of the right circle while breaking into the Rochester zone, which deflected off of an Amerks defenseman and passed starting goaltender, Chris Beckford-Tseu for the 1-0 lead
Syracuse struck again and made it 2-0 on a power play effort from Clay Wilson who netted a one timer from the point off of a feed from Andrey Plekhanov at the 4:40 mark of the first period.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Crunch built its lead to 3-0 when Wilson tallied his second of the game on a wrist shot from the blue line that found its way through traffic and passed Beckford-Tseu.
The Crunch picked up in the second period right where they left off as Maksim Mayorov buried a one timer off of a cross-ice feed in front of the net from Wilson at 3:57, recording the second power play goal of the night for Syracuse.
Mayorov tallied his second power play goal and the team’s third of the night which was crafted through an unselfish play that developed late in the second period. Mayorov delivered a cross ice pass to Jonathan Sigalet, who returned the puck right back in give-and-go fashion and ripped it into the back of the net.
Rochester got on the board midway through the third period when Karl Stewart received a centering pass in the slot and beat Dan LaCosta low stick side to make the score 5-1 in favor of Syracuse.
The Crunch answered a little over two minutes later when John Vigilante took a chip pass from Mayorov inside of the right circle and let go a wrister that found its way to the back of the net at 8:55 of the third. LaCosta made 23 saves and earned the victory, moving his record to a perfect 5-0-0 on the year.
