Syracuse, N.Y. (March 22, 2008)--As the group "Alabama" sings, Roll on 18-wheeler roll on, the Syracuse Crunch continued its roll with a 5-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday at the Onondaga County War Memorial.
Derick Brassard had a three-point night with a goal and two helpers. Duvie Westcott was the beneficiary of those helpers converting on the opportunities. Brett Motherwell cashed in from 60-feet with a blast and Kirill Starkov slammed home a Zenon Konopka rebound for his first of the year.
3-Stars--No. 1, Brassard, No. 2, Westcott, No. 3, Starkov.
5-Star Performance--Not only did Syracuse score five goals for the first time since a 5-1 win over Albany January 4th, but the win was the first time this season Syracuse has won five consecutive games and it was the fifth straight loss for the Griffins.
Marshmallow Peeps--To Brassard for setting up Westcott's two goals and then netting one of his own.
Must Be A Full Moon--After Trevor Frischmon netted a pair Wednesday, Westcott scores his second and third of the year, Motherwell his second and Starkov his first AHL tally.
Chocolate Bunnies, Easter Eggs and Jelly Beans--To Karl Goehring for another outstanding game between the pipes. Goehring made 37 saves. Motherwell and Konopka will find a few extra in their basket as well. Konopka had three assists and Motherwell had his goal and one assist.
What's Black, White and Red All Over?--A newspaper, no. A blushing Zebra, not exactly. But if you guessed a hockey referee, you're right! Jamie Koharski caught an errand stick to his right eye early in the first period and went off for repairs, he returned late in the period and during his 11-minute absence linesman Tim Kotyra was the acting ref.
Easter Egg Hunt--Wonder what the players are doing for the holiday? Tom Sestito will be going home to Rome, NY for a day with the family and a ham dinner. Westcott, along with Derek Dorsett, Konopka and a few others will head to a friend’s home for an Easter ham dinner that they are all looking forward to.
Marc Methot will have to alter his plans of grocery shopping. Instead he'll get in some video game time and he's been invited to Adam Pineault's place where the Crunch forward is planning on cooking a feast, fit for a ... defenseman?
David Cullen will have an Easter egg hunt for his children and then visit school friends of his children for another egg hunt and dinner.
They said it—
"We got some great passes tonight from Brass (Brassard). He made it easy for me to put those away. I was the right guy in the right spot. We're playing well all over the ice. It's a lot of fun winning." Duvie Westcott on his game.
"We’re winning the battles. We are out-muscling teams but at the same time we’re starting to realize that we're a better offensive team than we thought we were. We're starting to come into our own. It's a good combination right now and hopefully we can continue it." Captain Zenon Konopka's post-game thoughts.
"On my goal it was a great pass by Konopka. I was behind him and he saw me right away. Our power play was great tonight and we passed the puck well. If we can continue like this we'll keep winning. It was hard to re-adjust when I first came back from the NHL because I was only playing four or five minutes and here I play a lot more but I'm happy that we keep on the roll and that I contribute any way I can." Brassard's post-game comments.
